Sri Lankan Child among Harrow Christmas Card Competition winners - United Kigdom
Six year old Harini Aturupana, from Edgware became a runner up in this year's Christmas Card Competition organised jointly by the Harrow Council and the weekly Harrow Observer news paper.
All the parents and families of the children who took part in the competition attended a reception held on the day the winners were announced.
Harini Aturupana received her runners up certificate from the Harrow Mayoress Councillor Nana Ashante.
Harini's parents Dr. Senevi Athurupana and Mrs. Padma Wijayabandara Mudaligedara Athurupana said their daughter was delighted to take part in the competition.
Dr. Athurupana said that they are also very pleased that their daughter's drawing was given a recognition. "This is very important as it will encourage her to continue her creative activities." he said.
Christmas Card competition was held for children throughout October and November with the best entry winning the fabulous prize of switching on the Christmas lights at the town centre celebration on Saturday the 7th December.
They have received more than 100 entries depicting festive scenes. After much careful deliberation by the judges, card presented by 10-year-old Aarohi Kulkarni was selected as the overall winning entry of the competition.
One of the judges, Harrow Council cabinet member for children and schools, councillor Janet Mote, said: “We had some fantastic entries which made it very hard to pick the winning card.
“A huge thank you goes to everyone who took part and I hope the winner has a fantastic time being centre stage at the switching on of the lights ceremony.”he said.
Deputy editor at the Observer, Suzy Talbot, said: “We thank all of the children who took part for their efforts in this competition and congratulations to our winner.”
The judges said that they were so impressed with the entries that they have selected 10 runners up who were all "specially commended for their creative and attractive designs".
