Arjuna wants to help schools cricket - London
Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga who was in London to attend the Lord’s Taverners Legendary Test Captains’ Dinner had a discussion yesterday with some of the Sri Lankan expatriates living in the UK to hold a fund raising event to develop outstation cricket in Sri Lanka.
Talking to Sri Express Ranatunga said he had already started the Arjuna Ranatunga Cricket Trust to develop young kids in the rural areas.
He added that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) did not invest any money to improve the talents of young cricketers in rural areas.
So far he has placed an infrastructure development programme for these young cricketers in the rural areas and also delivered some cricket goods. To get funds for this venture Ranatunga is planning to organise a fund raising event in the UK, USA and Canada next year.
He went onto say that when he was the Chairman of SLC in 2008 he distributed cricket goods for 400 schools. Since SLC didn’t have a clear vision to help schools, he said, he had formed the Arjuna Ranatunga Trust to help the underprivileged.
Ranatunga is currently helping 14 cricket playing schools in the Kalutara district.
He went onto add that he was removed as SLC Chairman by former Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge as he insisted on giving international cricket prominence over the IPL.
