Kathina, today, is celebrated as the largest alms giving festival of the Buddhist world. Heathrow Athula Dassana International Buddhist Temple is currently taking part in a Vassa (rainy season). The season lasts for three month, at the end of this season there is a Katina festival.
The Vas Aradhana at Heathrow Temple (Athula Dassana International Buddhist Temple) was performed in July 2013, on the Poya Day. The rainy season is a time of giving and for devotees to express gratitude to monks. The festival originated 2500 years ago, and are the largest alms giving ceremony for Buddhists.
During the rainy season, a special Dhamma Discussion and a Bodhi Pooja programme is held at the Athula Dassana International Buddhist temple. The temple held its “Sath Sathi Pooja “programme on the 31st August 2013 at 6 p.m. in the Lampton School, Lampton Avenue, TW3 4EP.
The main sponsors were Mr. Dayananda Dissanayaka, Mr.Suresh Sebastian, Dr. Nishshanka Karunatilaka, Mr.Duminda Liyanagunawardana, Mrs.R.Kaluaarachchi, Ms.Harindi, Ms.Piyumika, Ms.Vasana, Mrs.Dinushi Ilankoon.
The meaning of “ Sath Sathi” Sath Sathiya or the Seven Weeks of the Lord Buddha after attaining the Enlightenment. The head of the temple Ven. Wanduramba Kassapa Thero and there devotees of the temple made beautiful small pavilions for the highlighted “ Sath Sathi” of Lord Budda. Venerable Malangama Pagngnasara Thero conducted that pooja and also gave a special dhamma speech for the all devotees who participated that day.
The day was a great success. Many participated in the event with great devotion. Devotees and other members of the community organised the event under the guidance of the head of the temple Ven. Wanduramba Kassapa Thero.
