On a glorious sun drenched August bank holiday Monday, the Mansfield Hosiery Mills Cricket Club (MHMCC) was buzzing with activity, as members of the Nottingham Sri Lankan Community Centre gathered for their inaugural 'Cricket and Food Festival 2013'. As one of the most successful cricket clubs in Nottinghamshire, the MHMCC could not have been a more apt venue for this grand occasion, with its lush green cricket field and impressive club house amongst the numerous facilities available to patrons.
As food stalls and live cooking stations' were setup with great haste by the organisers, the gathering crowd was alive with anticipation as the 'Combined 'Sri Lankan XI' including notable Sri Lankan national cricketers and the 'Nottinghamshire Invitation XI' including star players of the MHMCC took the field. Several hours of incredibly entertaining and high calibre limited overs cricket followed, which had spectators glued to the action from the edge of their seats. As the aroma of homemade 'Biriyani, 'Kottu Roti', 'Vade', Cutlets, Rolls and 'Hoppers' wafted through the cricket ground, even the most hardened cricket fanatic was forced to leave their seat to enjoy the culinary delights on offer. The children in the crowd had a field day too, as the 'Bouncy Castle' and sandpits, provided endless hours of carefree entertainment in the hot sun.
The conclusion of the cricket matches was followed by the awards ceremony during which the 'Combined Sri Lankan XI' were awarded prizes for the winning team, and the 'man of the match' awarded to Mr. Amila Wettasinghe of the 'Combined Sri Lankan XI'. The president of the Nottingham Sri Lankan Community Centre Dr. Buddhike Mendis paid a special tribute of thanks to the following: Mr. Malcolm Daniels, Mr. Stephen Brown, Mr Derrick Smallwood, and all the team at MHMCC for their generous hospitality throughout the entire day and for providing a first class venue; Mr. Kesara Jayasingha for co-ordinating activities between the MHMCC and the Nottingham Sri Lankan Community Centre, and enabling this event to materialise; Mr. Hemal Mendis for his efforts in selecting an exceptional 'Combined Sri Lankan XI' for the day; cricketers of the 'Nottinghamshire Invitation XI' and 'Combined Sri Lankan XI' for providing a scintillating day of cricket; and the Nottingham Sri Lankan Community Centre organising committee and guests for making this day a tremendous success. The 'Nottingham Sri Lankan Cricket and Food Festival' will undoubtedly be a successful annual function in the social event calendar of the Nottingham Sri Lankan Community Centre in the years to come.
