Talpahewa to take over as SL’s Deputy HC in London
Sri Lanka’s Deputy High Commissioner to the Maldives Dr. Chanaka Talpahewa has been nominated as the Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka High Commission in London, as the successor to Mr. Neville de Silva who recently finished his term, to be rushed to London.
T his decision has been taken by the External Affairs Ministry in Colombo after former High Commissioner to London Dr. Chris Nonis resigned from his post prematurely. Dr. Nonis who took up the post in September 2011 finished his initial term after two years. But he has been given an extension of another one year.
When Dr. Nonis was at the helm, he used to appoint another political appointee like him Mr. Sepala Ratnayake as the Acting High Commissioner when Dr. Nonis leaves London. However, once Dr. Nonis resigned and no Deputy High Commissioner available, External Affairs Ministry has appointed a career diplomat Ms. Chamari Rodrigo as the Acting High Commissioner until Dr. Talpahewa arrives.
Dr. Talpahewa who will assume duties soon in London as the Deputy High Commissioner, will have to be the Acting High Commissioner until a new High Commissioner will be appointed. According to a very reliable source,Sri Express learns that the Sri Lanka Government has no plans to appoint a new High Commissioner until the Presidential election is over.
Prior to this appointment Dr. Talpahewa served in New York, Turkey and the Maldives.
Dr. Talphahewa is a product of Royal College, Colombo. He has obtained his MBA, MA (IR) and BSc from University of Colombo and is also an Attorney-at-Law. He has the distinction of coming first in the country at the open competitive exam conducted to recruit officers to the Foreign Service.
He read for his PhD and MPhil at the University of Cambridge and was the recipient of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholarship, Developing World Education Fund Scholarship, Smuts Scholarship in Commonwealth Studies and British Chevening Scholarship.
A keen sportsman, Dr Talpahewa is the first Sri Lanka Rowing captain and is also a winner of South Asian Games medals. He holds two Sri Lanka rowing records as well.
Prior to his joining Sri Lanka Foreign Service he was attached to the CIC Group of Companies as Manager - Legal.
The book titled Peaceful Intervention in Intra-State Conflicts; Norwegian Involvement in the Sri Lankan Peace Process authored by Dr. Talpahewa is to be published by Ashgate in May 2015. ENDS
