Going Berserk

Despite the number of male Tamil teachers, PWC had during our time, especially in the Senior School to teach Science subjects, there was only a single Tamil lady teacher (in the middle school) to teach English;  she rode a lady’s Raleigh bicycle to and fro from home.

Impartiality And Fairness

Wednesday, 26 Jun 2013 13:41

This episode consists of an incident experienced by a Cambrian  (who now lives in Singapore), while he was in the O/Level class, along with few other feedbacks which go to show how school teachers in our era taught and entertained students while being firm.

The great philanthropist Sir Charles Henry De Soysa’s dream of building two schools for children in Moratuwa and naming those as Prince and Princess of Wales to commemorate the visit of Edward VII (Prince of Wales at the time) to Colombo in 1875 came true when permission was granted to his request by the British authorities.

Sinhala Grammar and Bisection

I am thankful to those old Cambrians, Sebastianites, one Thora and a Rajan, who responded to the series with some of their own experiences which go to show youthful fun we shared, as much as the quality of the teaching staff we were privileged to learn from during our era, are being rekindled. E-mail interaction, in this respect, certainly goes to show how the series has managed to hoist a different kind of dormant 'Kundalini' among old Cambrians!

Although there were several ‘hard nuts’ with ‘light fingers’ at our college, there was always an unwritten law that no one should steal from classmates. Whenever there was any such misdeed our drawing master became a self appointed ‘criminal investigator’ with his remarkable psychological tactics. Apart from his yarns, he was very popular for his self-styled investigations and earned another nickname as the ‘PWC CID’.

Romance and Chemistry

Prince of Wales College science laboratory is associated with many memories despite the traumatic incident where one of our adored teachers committed suicide by swallowing a concoction of concentrated acid as mentioned in my last episode.

Madness and Sadness

Before I could read the printed version of Part II, I received the following feedback from USA which goes to say that there are many versions to this popular story:

Hunting With Home-made Bullets

The response to my first installment on the series was instant. Kevin, who was an old boy of St. Sebastian College, wrote to me all the way from Australia reminding me of his experience with Mr. ‘Daddi Bidi’ on a hunting episode.

Shaggy Dog Stories

Saturday, 18 Aug 2012 07:28

During a casual pow-wow with a friend, over a glass of wine, last week we discussed the fate of modern children, the denial of their childhood and turning them into robots by anxious parents who realise very little about the psychological damage they inflict on their offspring.
