Thomas Jefferson, the President from 1801-1809, who was totally against slavery had an affair with a light-skinned black slave called Sally Hemings with whom he had five children. But, he himself had slaves working for him on a plantation and Sally and the children were given freedom according to his last will only after he died.
Warren Harding, the President from 1921-1923, had affairs with two women. He had a daughter with one of them and suspected his wife was going to poison him. One of the two women had to be silenced as she threatened to expose the affair before the election to tarnish Harding's image. She was paid a large amount of money and was sent to Japan with her family to live there. She also received monthly payments from the Republican Party to keep quiet.
Although the affair was a rumour for sometime, it was made public when the letters and poetry written by Harding were brought forward.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was President from 1933-1945 and portrayed a loving family life, but had an affair with his wife's social secretary Lucy Mercer for 30 years. The affair came out when Mrs. Roosevelt found out love letters written by Lucy to her husband.Lucy was with him when he died. After his death, his son claimed that his father had an affair with his private secretary and also with Princess Martha of Sweden who resided in the White House during World War II. President Eisenhower who occupied the White House from 1953-1961 had a love affair with a young woman named Kay Summersby. Kay was an attractive former British model. After Eisenhower died, she published a book on their affair titled Past Forgetting: My Love Affair with Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The most famous of all was John F. Kennedy who was at the White House for just two years. He had a string of love affairs as well as countless sexual relations with women. Among them were White House workers, girlfriends of gangsters, reporters and movie stars.
His most famous affairs were with Angie Dickinson, Kim Novak and Marilyn Monroe. Monroe really wanted to marry the President. She died of an overdose in 1962 at the age of 36. Kennedy was also involved with a woman who was suspected of being a German spy, named Inga Arvad. Kennedy's successor Lyndon Johnson, was the President from 1963-1969. It is said that he had his own little harem of women at the White House.
Bill Clinton who was the President from 1993-2001 was the most recent US leader caught cheating on his wife. He was accused of having relationships before and after he became the President. It is said that there were many one-time encounters that Clinton had with many different women.
Two famous stories were those of Sally Perdue, who refused to be silent about the affair and Paula Jones who filed a sexual harassment case against Clinton. Then came the best of all, Monica Lewinsky, the intern who kept a stained dress to prove her case. The revelation rocked the entire United States. At the beginning Clinton denied that he had any sexual relations with her. But he admitted it when the taped conversations with Monica emerged. The scandal led to the impeachment of President Clinton in 1998 by the U.S. House of Representatives. But he was cleared of perjury and obstructions justice at the Senate trial.
Now the unthinkable. A US gossip magazine National Enquirer dropped a bombshell that President Barak Obama's wife Michelle is planning to divorce him on the grounds of adultery. It is said that he had relationships with at least 12 women, most of them famous including the US Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, singer Beyoncé, a 22-year-old Miss Israel, California's Attorney General Kamala Harris and the Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thoring-Schmidt whom he flirted openly with at the funeral of Nelson Mandela making Mrs. Obama jealous. Obama is also accused of seeing his high school prom date Megan Hughes behind his wife's back.
It is said that Mrs. Obama has already met with an attorney at the White House to workout the details of the alleged divorce. According to rumours she will stay in Washington with their children and he will return to his native Hawaii. She will claim her share of lucrative book and other deals of Obama when he leaves the office.
Whatever it is, the demand for Obama will last for a few more years. It is unlikely that he will lie under oath as Clinton did. The power attracts many things in life. It is not easy being the most powerful man on earth.
