A capacity crowd of friends, relatives and well-wishers gathered at the Don Moore hall in Carlingford on Sunday the 27th to felicitate Sunil de Silva PC who completed 50 Years of continuous legal practice as a Barrister at Law. The evening was as Sunil would have liked it, full of laughter and good cheer and an occasion for friends to meet and greet. It was a fitting tribute to a man of considerable talent, a man always pleasant and affable, and a man of geniality.

The organisers led by Sunil’s good friends Sanath Nanayakkara and his charming wife Maya, Ananda Amaranath and wife Praneetha, Basil Gunawardena and wife Menik, and with some help from Indira  Gonsalkorale, had done a wonderful job in not only organising the event, but in arranging the days agenda that provided everyone present an opportunity to mingle with each other, listen to speeches that gave even someone who did not know Sunil very well an opportunity to understand and appreciate him, and provide everyone with a sumptuous dinner with plenty of good cheer to enjoy the food.

Ananda Amaranath did a great job as the Emcee and as the time management expert and laced his introductions with amusing anecdotes about Sunil.

The Sri Lanka Association of NSW which hosted the occasion had its President Professor Shelton Peiris introducing Sunil to the audience and tracing his career from Sri Lanka to Australia. Mark Tedeschi QC – Senior Crown Prosecutor who spoke about Sunil’s time as a Crown Prosecutor in NSW paid tribute to Sunil’s extraordinary sense of determination in pursuing his case as a prosecutor but always with a sense of fairness to those who he prosecuted.

Maithri Panagoda, called in at short notice to speak a few words about Sunil the lawyer, paid a rich tribute to a man of considerable knowledge and acumen in his chosen field. Ernest MacIntyre had the job of speaking about Sunil the actor and dramatist and his many forays into acting, both on the stage, for TV and in films.
