Rodney Widanapathirana’s book ‘Sri Lanka Travel Notes’ has become a hit among both the Sri Lankan expatriate community and the British in London.

In this book, the author has touched on some of the most unusual, but interesting places to visit in Sri Lanka.

With the end of the war, people can now travel freely across the country and there are scores of people visiting Colombo, Kandy, Trincomalee, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Passikuda, Galle, Matara, amongst other key towns to satisfy their quest for travel.

‘Sri Lanka Travel Notes’ discovers many interesting, lesser-known places one could visit in Sri Lanka.

Widanapathirana was in London recently to participate in the launch of Wimal Alahakoon’s film ‘Maw Senehasa’, for which he himself has written the script. ‘Sri Lanka Travel Notes’ were  first published as a series of travel articles in the ‘Tharunaya’ newspaper.

The London-based Sri Lankan travel agent said that this book is valuable to visitors planning to explore Sri Lanka.

"I felt the book could have been complete with pictures for each article and at least an overview map, so that those of us who have never been to places mentioned would have a frame of reference. The book is very interesting and does increase the curiosity to see the places described", said a British woman traveler, Ms. K. Bailey.

Widanapathirana is a veteran journalist. He served as a former editor of the Sinhala weekly ‘Tharunaya’. As a film maker, he has traveled extensively in Sri Lanka and made more than 200 television documentaries and 10 tele-dramas. He is at present currently on the editorial staff of the ‘Daily Lankadeepa newspaper.

Gamini Akmeemana, the translator of the book, works as the arts writer for the ‘Daily Mirror’. He has worked in fields as diverse as photojournalism, drama and fiction writing. He is the author of four novels and was awarded the Gratiaen prize for English fiction in 1996.
