"Peace through Sports" Support SLFO UK
Published: 21 Jun 2013
Peace through Sports-The efforts of Sri Lanka†is the name of the Sri Lanka Ministry of Sports initiative to promote sport for a greater benefit. Using sport to bring all the communities together is something that the Sri Lanka UK Football Organisation (SLFO UK) has already started in the last two years.
SLFO Committee members met with the Secretary to the Minister of Sports Mr. Anura Jayawickrama and Mr. Elmo Perera co-ordinating secretary to the minister of sports during their recent visit to London. They attended a workshop on Sports for Development and Peace (SDP) national action plan & analysis held at the Commonwealth Secretariat. The SLFO had a discussion about their aims and they were very pleased that these were similar to what the Sports Ministry was currently engaged in Sri Lanka. The Secretary stated that the Ministry’s goal was to consider sport as the best way of achieving lasting peace in the country.
The SLFO has already held two very successful annual football tournaments with all groups of our community participating. The last tournament was held at the Ashford Town Football ground on 19th May. This year’s event included a 7 a side soft ball cricket competition as well as a junior footballing event. The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Dr. Chris Nonis attended the event and he was pleased with the success of SLFO had achieved in promoting football and cricket. Dr. Nonis wanted to consider this event as a permanent Sri Lankan sporting fixture in the future.
SLFO UK hopes that all the members of the Sri Lankan community will continue their support by participating in the Organisations future events.
