Secretary Defence Visits Eastern Province

During a special visit made to the several areas in Eastern Province yesterday (29th March), Secretary of Defence and Urban Development, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa visited the special monument setup in Aranthalawa where 31 Buddhist Bikkhus were brutally killed by the LTTE 26 years ago.

Chairperson of the MOD Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa also accompanied with the Secretary at the visit.

Chief incumbent Ven. Headoga Indasara Thero and a group of Buddhist monks were victimised to this act of barbarism of the LTTE while they were travelling in a bus belonging to Ampara depot. The Aranthalawa Massacre took place on 2nd June 1987 and the bus carrying Buddhist monks and a few unarmed civilians were ambushed by 20 armed LTTE cadres near the village of Nuweratheanne, in Aranthalawa.

HE the President unveiled this special monument recently (24th March).

Meanwhile, Mr Rajapaksa declared opened the Mangalagama Police Station in Batticaloa. Mangalagama is also a village which frequently underwent LTTE atrocities during the war period.

On his way, Secretary Defence paid homage to the Chief Incumbent of Deegawapi Temple, Ven. Nannapurawe Buddha Rakkita thero during his inspection visit to the Stupa which is undergoing Reconstruction and Rehabilitation process presently. He also encouraged the Civil Security Forces Personnel who have been engaged in the charity drive. Director General of Civil Security Department, Rear Admiral (Rtd.) Ananda Peiris was also present.

Finally Mr. Rajapaksa arrived at the Deyata Kirula National Development Exhibition site at Hardy College in Ampara. During his visit to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development premises, Secretary Defence distributed stationary packs for 20 Ranaviru children in area. Secretary also witnessed several exhibits and displays showcased by the security forces stalls.

Rear Admiral (Rtd.) & Hon. MP Dr. Sarath Weerasekara, Director General of Media Centre for National Security Mr. Luxhman Hulugalle, Ministry Officials including Additional Secretary (Admin) Mrs. Indu Rathnayaka, were also present.
