Beragala to Wellawaya road is known as a narrow road with many sharp bends on the Colombo-Ratnapura-Wellawaya-Batticaloa (A004) route. The stretch will be widened to ease the high traffic congestion while reducing the dangerous nature of the road due to the narrowness and precipitous surroundings. It would be renovated without causing any damage to the historical value and natural beauty of the road. Bridges and box culverts too will be reconstructed along the road.
Meanwhile President Rajapaksa also opened the newly constructed bridge at the Lemasthota along the Wellawaya road. The bridge has been constructed at a cost of Rs.126 million.
The Colombo-Ratnapura-Wellawaya-Batticaloa (A004) route is the main road connecting the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Eastern Provinces. The road will provide many opportunities for people living in the Eastern Province which is currently being developed under the Negenahira Navodaya programme.
