Kandyan Battle in London 2014
Published: 16 May 2014
As the summer cricket season in England opens up, with a tour of the Sri Lankan cricket team to look forward to, another mouth watering encounter that originated in the hills of Kandy is being replayed in London this weekend.
Two leading schools of Sri Lanka, Dharmaraja and Kingswood have played each other over hundred years in Kandy. The 108th encounter between these two schools was held in Kandy this year with Dharmaraja emerging as winners for the 34th time. Known locally as the ‘Battle of the Maroons of the Hills’, this is a colourful encounter that is looked forward to by the locals year after year.
This year, for the 3rd time, the old boys of these two prestigious schools will re-play the cricket match in the popular T20 format in London with true ‘Big-Match’ atmosphere being recreated. The match day, as in previous years, is expected to attract a large crowd with old boys, their families and friends attending a day of fun on the 24th of May (Saturday) at the Little Harlington Playing Fields, Sipson Lane, Hayes, Middlesex, UB3 5EU. The festivities are expected to kick off at 1 PM, with food stalls and music (including baila) with a DJ on site. Separate entertainment for children has also been planned and entrance will be free of charge for this family event.
The Dharmaraja OBU (London) is hosting this year’s event and the organising committee is being led by its dynamic President Upul Ekanayake. He is being assisted by the Sports Secretary Dinesh Kapukotuwa and others. The Dharmaraja team will be led by Ruwan Pitigala this year and the team has already commenced preparations. Cricket Chairman of Dharmaraja College OBU UK Dhanushka Herath is the vice caption and Malinga Ranathunga, Thilina Batangala, Janaka Abeysinghe, Pradeep Munidasa, Ishantha Samaraweera, Hasitha Samaraweera, Sajith Denuwara, Amal Navarathna, Sampath Nishshanka and Prasanna Wickramanayake are the other members of the team. The Kingswood team which won last year’s encounter is led by Kanishka Dissanayake and Namal Kobbewela, Stephan Edirisinghe, Prasad Thalgaspitiya, Numal Perera, Wishva Hettiarachehi, Surath Liyanage, Roshan Bandara, Kasun Wijeratne, Ashad Ali Khan and Sugath Thilakaratne will be the other members of the team.
The event is open to all and the exciting cricket will be complemented by quality entertainment outside the boundary ropes. The food stalls are expected to deliver the popular short eats, koththu, lump rise and hoppers. A cake stall will provide some desserts and hot beverages to the attendees. Being a long weekend, many participants are expected from outside of London. A soft ball six a side match for amateur players has been held in the past years and is expected to be back by popular demand this year to be played after the main match.
The Dharmaraja and Kingswood OBUs (London) invite all living in and around London (and elsewhere) to join in to taste the wonderful ambience of a truly Sri Lankan big match in the outskirts of London. For advertising and further details please contact Dulan on 07910493016 or Upul on 07751671460.
