VAS ARADHANA AT KINGSBURY TEMPLE

The invitation for the resident monks of the Sri Saddhatissa International Buddhist Centre to observe the rainy season retreat took place on   Sunday 9 July 2017, after the Esala FullMoon  Poya Day. Dr and Mrs M.P. Silva and family extended the invitation to Aggamahapandita Galayaye Piyadassi  Sangha Nayaka Thero and Five  the resident monks at the ceremony attended by a crowd of devotees. Ven. 150 year celebration of Ceylon Tea - UNIQUE GLOBAL CEYLON TEA PARTIES

Year 2017 becomes the quasquicentennial anniversary of the Ceylon Tea industry. The Colombo Tea Traders' Association, the apex body of the industry, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tea Board, the state regulatory agency for the industry, will conduct a comprehensive programme to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Ceylon Tea with several celebratory events throughout the year. The celebrations commenced in January from the head office at the Tea Board, with the unveiling of a sculptured bust of James Taylor, the Scotsman who arrived in Ceylon in 1847 mainly to grow coffee.

Putting misconceptions into perspective

A particular planter appeared to have been disturbed for calling the Ceylon Tea Traders Association (CTTA) as the "Apex body of the Industry" in my article on 1 July 2017 on the Sesquicentennial of the Ceylon Tea Industry. He wrote to me enquiring the reason for using such a phrase, stating that the CTTA was created long after the tea industry. Responding to his query, I replied stating that the CTTA was formed 27 years after the commercial cultivation of tea commenced, for the specific purpose of regulating and monitoring the tea trade, at the request of the producers of tea, who were confined to their plantations, and in any case, had no knowledge or experience in the marketing or exporting of the product.
