So, this is Christmas!

The year 2017 has been on a roller coaster ride, where the ordinary folk on it have been screaming each time there was a bump on the ride, while a few selected privileged ones have been throwing their hands up and enjoying the ride. At the end of yet another year, there comes Christmas, either to celebrate or follow Jesus Christ's advice, which is 'not to concentrate only on amassing wealth, but to understand that all evil things come from within the man's heart to defile him, unless the heart is pure and the mind is cleansed' (Mark 7:21-23).

My cooking challenge is still open

There are far too many cooking programmes in British TV but the only thing is I didn’t figure out any technique of energy saving in cooking. The contestants or even the famous chef’s just cook without due care for any wastage of energy, may be because they do not have to meet the energy bill.

The Burgher Community in Sri Lanka

The term 'Dutch Burgher' is used to identify the ethnic group involving the descendants of Dutch Origin, who settled down in Ceylon after the British took over the Southern and Western coastal areas. In the early 17th century, Portuguese and Ceylonese Kingdoms ruled the country constantly, by battling with each other. Although the Portuguese were never able to hold full autonomy in the administration of Ceylon, their ruling was somewhat oppressive. The Dutch remained continuously engaged in a protracted war of independence from the Spanish rule.

Cooking, what is it?

The proposal I find most congenial both as a cook and as a chemistry teacher is this.  Cooking is the whole series of operations used by humans to turn raw materials, mainly animal carcasses and harvested plants, into food, that is, into something edible, digestible and nutritious. Those operations which I’ll talk about is energy wasted in cooking.

Journey in Search of the Deprived

Sirasa TV1 initially stimulated the writer and wife to visit Habarana, when a little seven-day-old girl was mauled by a dog and died. Upon arrival in Habarana, it was found that the entire area, consisting three villages, Asirigama, Eppawala, and Haba Divul Wewa, did not have pure water for consumption, as a consequence the number of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients was on the increase. It was revealed further, that these villages require a water purification unit (RO Plant) that is normally installed by the Sri Lanka Navy. In this respect, a detailed report indicating the current percentage of the CKD patients and so forth (covering all villages), is being prepared with the help of the Samurdi Officer, Dhanapala. He has undertaken the responsibility to obtain signatures from the full gamut of villagers, and post the petition direct to the Gammedda Secretariat, for onward transmission to the Sri Lanka Navy for their vetting purposes.

Trans fat is considered by many doctors to be the worst type of fat you can eat

Unlike other dietary fats, trans fat also called trans-fatty acids both raises your LDL ("bad") cholesterol and lowers your HDL ("good") cholesterol. A diet laden with trans-fat increases your risk of heart disease, the leading killer of men and women. Here's some information about trans-fat and how to avoid it. In a C=C double bond if there are two groups are on the same side of the C=C bond then they are on CIS arrangement. If the groups such as CH3  or even H atoms on the opposite side of the  C=C double bond then they are in TRANS position. They are the CIS and TRANS.

PETROL FIASCO - VIP'S FLAGRANT BEHAVOUR

The precipitous petrol crisis in the country emerged, on 3 November, from rumours by word of mouth, while the line Minister and the Petroleum Development Resources Secretariat kept mum until the delinquency hit a crisis level, and the exasperated motorists started to go on a rampage. The Minister's request to the public, 'not to panic' later, was akin to ‘shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted’.
